It was an incredible weekend that wrapped up an amazing 9 weeks of Financial Peace University for our church. During this period 300 adults cut up 194 credit cards, paid off over $409,000 in consumer debt, and saved over $183,000 in cash! I’ve been hearing stories from many of these families about the blessings they have received since starting FPU and I want to share one with you today. Jimy and Patricia Helms contacted me and told me how going through Financial Peace University has impacted their life already. Here’s their story:
“We were applying what we have learned through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University program with our LifeGroup at Lifepointe and we were working hard to get Baby Step 1 done (saving $1,000 in cash as an emergency fund), and we had managed to save $700.
One Saturday we were doing some yard work for Jimy’s mom, because she needed some mulch in her yard. We took Jimy’s truck and got a load from the recycling center, and Jimy unloaded it while Isabella, mom and I were inside. Jimy went to drive his truck around the block to knock off any extra pieces, but when he returned he said something was wrong with his tire. Turns out he had a flat, and it was beyond repair!
By this time it was almost 6:00 PM, and we started frantically calling around for tire places that were still open. Tire Kingdom said that they had 4 tires in stock and could put them on before they closed if we could head straight there. We only wanted to do one tire, but after getting the truck there there they said it would be best to do all 4 because they were all in the same boat. So we did.
And just guess what the total was for the tires, installation, balance, alignment, and tax. $680. We had saved just enough to cover the emergency without using a credit card or any form of debt! We were so blessed that it happened on the weekend, since Jimy drives daily on the highway to work and picks up our daughter after work. We are now trying to get the emergency fund built back up again, but thanks to Financial Peace University we learned firsthand the value of an emergency fund and benefits of paying with cash!
